TUESDAY 8 MARCH INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

SHE IS AMAZING IN SPORTS!

While any day makes for a great opportunity to celebrate the women in your life, International Women’s Day gives you one more reason to do exactly that. International Women’s Day is on March 8th and is a global holiday that recognizes women’s incredible achievements, raises awareness, and encourages others to advocate for gender equality.

International women’s day is celebrated widely in the world. The earliest recorded celebration of this holiday was by the people in New York City in 1909. The cause was taken up by many parties and women’s suffrage organizations across Europe, with the official date tottering between February and March for many years. Finally, March 8th was selected by Germany in 1914 and the date has stuck ever since. International Women’s Day was recognized by the UN in 1975. Over the past twenty years, this holiday has evolved from a call for radical social change to a day of awareness of the challenges and triumphs unique to women around the world.

International Women’s Day is a meaningful day for all women. It is the day that recognizes and celebrates the values and huge commitment of women to their communities, their organizations, their families, and within their workplaces.

International Women’s Day is a core day that links women and girls around the world, acknowledging that we constitute more than half the global population and contribute far more than half in community service and support.

UNESCO states, “International Women's Day is an occasion to celebrate the progress made towards achieving gender equality and women's empowerment but also to critically reflect on those accomplishments and strive for a greater momentum towards gender equality worldwide. It is a day to recognize the extraordinary acts of women and to stand together, as a united force, to advance gender equality around the world.”

The United Nation's theme for this year’s observance is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow” in recognition and celebration of the women and girls who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation and response and to honor their leadership and contribution towards a sustainable future.

Sport has the power to change lives. The ability to drive gender equality by teaching women and girls’ teamwork, self-reliance, resilience, and confidence. Women in sport defy gender stereotypes and social norms, make inspiring role models, and show men and women as equals.

The Women’s Sports Foundation highlighted some of the women in sport leading the charge in the fight for equal pay. In advance of their World Cup win, the USWNT took a stand against ‘institutionalized gender discrimination’ against the team. The women’s team has performed exceedingly better than their male counterparts, who in 2018 failed to even qualify for the men’s World Cup. While the women have placed in the top three in every women’s World Cup since 1991 when the tournament began.

Looking to hockey, the U.S. Women’s National Ice Hockey Team, before their historic gold medal in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, were fighting for equal pay and treatment to that of the men’s team. The New York Times reported that at that time the women were barely scraping a living wage and were left out of pre-Olympic marketing plans despite their continued success as a team. Their star forward Hilary Knight said: “We’re passionately pursuing something for the greater good.”
