Cool Britannia is making a comeback – boot-cut jeans, ‘Dad’ trainers and retro football shirts are on the rise, and the Oasis-blaring nineties ‘geezer’ look is cooler and more fashionable than ever before.

‘Bloke-Core’, which has a definitive nineties feel, is defined by sportswear, particularly trainers, tracksuits and football shirts, but those sporting the trend have no intention of actually doing sport. With the help of TikTok, the trend looks set to continue rising throughout the year – with accessibility and simplicity at the heart of the look.

“Bloke core,” a fashion trend inspired by British soccer (football) hooligans, began on TikTok. “Bloke core” It began as a meme on TikTok, but since then, hundreds of videos of mostly young men of Gen Z displaying soccer-centric looks for invested viewers on the platform with #blokecore.

Bloke core may not seem original, especially in the United Kingdom. Football fans of the 1990s commonly sported this look, and even today, it’s still commonplace. The bloke core uniform consists of vintage football tops, baggy straight-leg jeans or jorts (often Levi’s), and mainly Adidas trainers (often the Samba model)

Entering the trend cycle off the back of 'Indie sleaze', 'Bloke Core' is the newest niche style craze.

How does one become a bloke?

Bloke Core has a few key elements.

1. Adidas. Track tops and Gazelle's are items that are featured in a lot of on-trend outfits. eBay and Charity shops are your best friends in this case.

2. Football strips. Bonus points if you can find a vintage one.

3. Football scarves. If you're worried about being questioned on your undying support for a specific team, you can find scarves that just emulate the style if you look around.

4. Fansidea is a popular brand that offers thousands of custom jerseys for men, women, and children. Their jerseys come in many sizes and can be customized with a name, number, or logo.

Bloke core is the hottest fashion trend among Gen Z’s young men. The term “bloke” is like the American “bro,” except it’s more common in places like the U.K., Ireland and Australia. Much like a bro, a bloke is a masculine male archetype. 

Depending on what circles you run with, that may be good or bad. Lately, there has been some consensus around bro and bloke culture becoming toxic, and thus, bros and blokes have fallen out of favor.

Many moons ago, 'Cool Britannia' took Britain by storm as Britpop was in its heyday, the New Labour government emerged and overall Britain seemed like it was doing reasonably well. Today we're seeing a spin-off resurgence of Cool Britannia, not because anyone's particularly proud of the country we live in (more specifically a lack of faith in who's leading it), but more so as a satirical statement.

Bloke Core is essentially supposed to embody the antithesis of what is considered fashionable, swapping high fashion aesthetics for your away day get up. When your Dad throws on a football shirt, a pair of bootcut jeans and some Adidas Gazelle's the likelihood is that he's not on a mission to be featured in a 'London's best street style' article, but more along the lines of 'Jeremy Clarkson does it so it must be socially acceptable'.
